What is Cresson Sanatorium and Prison?
Cresson is a historic site in Central Pennsylvania open on select dates for self-guided tours, photography, and paranormal experiences. The property reflects three distinct eras of use, including its time as a sanatorium and later as a prison complex.

Are tours guided or self-guided?
Exploration and photography visits are fully self-guided. Overnight events include some staff-led time, followed by open, self-guided investigation.

Can we explore anywhere on the property?
You’re free to explore all open areas. Any restricted spaces are clearly marked or locked. Buildings F, G, and H are currently closed.
​
Are there any areas off-limits?
Yes. The stairs and balcony in the chapel are strictly off limits. Any restricted areas are marked or secured. Violating these boundaries will result in removal from the property and a site ban.

How much time do we need?
Most visitors spend at least 3 hours. The property is large, and many guests return to explore more.

What types of tickets do you offer?
We offer 3-hour access, full-day access, and select overnight experiences, including paranormal investigation events.

Do we need to book in advance?
Yes. We limit attendance to ensure a good experience for all visitors.

Is this a good location for photography?
Yes. The site offers a wide range of environments including institutional interiors, tunnels, and large outdoor areas, making it a popular destination for photographers.

Will it be crowded?
The site is large (32 acres, ~20 buildings with a combined half a million sq ft), so visitors spread out. You may see others in popular areas like the chapel or tunnels, but most of the property feels open.

Can we plan ahead which buildings to visit?
Yes. You’ll receive a map at check-in to help plan your route.

Are ticks or bugs an issue?
They can be. Tick spray is recommended, especially with deer on the property.

Do I need a mask?
Masks are not required, but are recommended if you have allergies or sensitivities to dust or musty conditions.

What should I bring?
Sturdy shoes, a flashlight, water, and any photography or paranormal equipment you’d like to use. Tick spray is recommended.

Is airsoft happening during visits?
No. Airsoft activities are scheduled separately and do not overlap with public access.

Where do we park?
Follow Correction Road about half a mile until you reach the parking lot. It is located across from a brick building, which is the Visitor’s Building. Check-in is inside.

Are there restrooms on site?
Yes, portable restrooms are available in multiple locations.
​
Is this site used for paranormal investigations?
Yes. Cresson hosts both private and public paranormal investigations and is a well-known location for ghost hunting in Pennsylvania. It has been featured on Ghost Hunters, Destination Fear, and other popular shows.
