Accessibility Statement

Cresson Sanatorium & Prison is a historic, abandoned property. While we aim to be as welcoming as possible, visitors should understand the physical realities of the site before planning a visit. Please note, closed-toe shoes are always required to tour.

Site Conditions

Cresson is not a modern or fully accessible facility. The property includes:

  • No active electricity or climate control

  • No elevators or lifts

  • Multiple staircases, uneven surfaces, and narrow passageways

  • Low lighting conditions

  • Dusty, musty, and deteriorated areas consistent with abandoned structures

  • Debris and uneven ground throughout the site

These conditions may present challenges for individuals with mobility limitations, respiratory sensitivities, visual impairments, or other accessibility needs.

Outdoor Areas During Tours

During scheduled tours and events, visitors may enjoy the exterior of the buildings located within the upper 34 acres of the property without entering them. Many guests choose to experience the site by walking the roads and sidewalks and viewing buildings from the outside only.

Access to the property is limited to scheduled tours and events. Driving into the property requires advance arrangements and is not permitted outside of organized access times.

Tours & Building Access
  • Guided tours require the use of stairs

  • Self-guided tours do not require stairs, though some buildings have steps at entry points

  • Mobility aids such as canes, walkers, or similar devices are welcome, with the understanding that site conditions may limit access in certain areas

Restrooms

There are no indoor restrooms on site.
Portable restrooms (porta-potties) are available during tours and events.

ADA Limitations

Due to the age, condition, and historic nature of the property, Cresson does not meet full ADA accessibility standards. Certain areas may be inaccessible, and access may vary depending on the type of tour or event.

Accommodations & Communication

Accessibility needs are individual, and we are always willing to explore reasonable, workable accommodations when possible.

We strongly encourage guests to reach out in advance with any questions or accessibility concerns so we can help you decide whether a visit will be comfortable and worthwhile.
